The Horse Show
The Horse Show in the RDS (a mere stone throw from Kavanaghs Mews) has got to be a singular phenomenon for recognising the great love of the Irish for the Horse. Yet in truth for me it gives annual recognition to an indigenous breed of horse that were it not for the full hearted courage of some unsung leaders in the field of breeding for preservation that somehow that treasured breed might have been lost. I write of course of the Irish Draught...the only native breed of horse in Ireland. Versatile, athletic and intelligent with a wonderful temperament...not dissimilar perhaps to the character of those who have long served to preserve her. Traditionally, it was the horse of the countryside...and still is for many ...and particularly for Helen Kelly, looking after them with an authentic dedication that our farming ancestors would be proud of as they catch glimpses of her Trojan work today. Helen works with a very special group of people dedicated to protecting and preserving the living heritage of the Irish Draught horse in Ireland.
It's worth visiting herself and Christopher at Lough Bishop House in Westmeath ... only an hour from Dublin...and for rare breed farming and country accommodation and food like you've never tasted before...http://loughbishophouse.com/
